| Scania - what? - where? Scania is an ancient cultural region in the very south of Scandinavia. Originally an integral and central part of Denmark, today of the four Scanian provinces only Bornholm remains Danish, while Blekinge, Halland and Skåne are part of Sweden. Some of the best soil in the world is found here, so agriculture and agricultural industry are still important in the highly industrialised regional economy. If you look in your kitchen you are likely to find the aseptic beverage cartons from Tetra Pak in Lund. Wherever vodka is served you should find Absolut from Åhus. Soon you are also likely to encounter the functional food of Probi. Fine examples of Scanian products, all of them. Furthermore, Scania is where the "smörgåsbord" was invented. The million and a half inhabitants of Scania are mainly protestants, however very secularised, blessed with very low infant mortality and high life expectancy, and one of the highest internet household penetrations in the world. They are, as a rule, slightly overweight and tend to drink a lot when they do. Which they don't all that often. They seldom have snow on Christmas. Much less naked polar bears in their streets. Scania - who? The Scanians and their descendants have influenced our common history and heritage, but are also quite visible in modern culture. From arts and entertainment you may be familiar with names such as Anita Ekberg and Birgit Nilsson or Max von Sydow and Stellan Skarsgård. No? Roxette, then? You may have come across Martin Dahlin and Mikael Pernfors in sports, though. You must have heard of Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin or Charles Lindbergh? William the Conqueror? Aah - you thought they were Swedes or something! Well, so did many of them… Neither Sweden nor Denmark recognise the Scanians as having any sort of minority status. Sweden officially does not distinguish between nationality and citizenship. Swedes generally do not eat eel, but Scanians do. Scania - why? The Scanians inhabit the most warred-over territory in the world, invaded almost 40 (yes, forty) times up until the 18th century. In Blekinge, Halland and Skåne they have been subjected to a massive, still ongoing, "swedification" policy. It might not come as a surprise that the Scanians have kept a very low profile for quite some time. The purpose of this site is to assist in these efforts. After all, we do not eat rotten herring. Ever. Scania - I know that name! Some 80 years ago Maskinfabriks Aktiebolaget Scania started producing trucks/lorries in Malmö, Scania's largest city. They soon merged with VABIS, moved away, and the corporation now bearing our name has, sadly, not had any significant part of its activities in Scania ever since. We still proudly use their products, but this name thing must be set straight. Consider yourself duly informed. Scania - more... The following sites provide further information. "Vill Svarrje ente va multikulturellt faur di nokk stenga grensen. Henne ve Markaryd." |
